This Aniimo review looks at Pawprint Studio’s free-to-play open-world creature-catching RPG about two months after its September 2026 Steam launch, with Season 1 “Departure with the Wind” Part 2 (version 1.1) live since October 29, 2026. You explore the continent of Idyll, catch creatures called Aniimo, and can merge with them to fight, fly and swim as they do. The biggest question before launch was whether it would be another gacha. For catching creatures, it isn’t, and that changes how the whole game feels.

The PC version runs on Windows and costs nothing to download. Play Aniimo free on Steam.

Key Takeaways

  • Free to play on Windows PC (Steam, Epic and an official launcher), PS5, Xbox, iOS and Android
  • Creatures are caught in the open world with Aniipods, not pulled from gacha banners
  • Steam reviews sit at Mostly Positive: 71% of 14,405 English reviews
  • Twine lets you become your Aniimo and control it directly
  • Version 1.1 added 51 new Aniimo, the Whisperwake Isles and a level cap of 70

What Aniimo Is

Aniimo is an open-world RPG where you play a Pathfinder exploring Idyll, a continent full of creatures that live in their own ecosystems. You track them, weaken them in real-time fights and catch them with Aniipods. Your team then follows you around, works your Homeland, and fights beside you or as you.

Developer and publisher are the same company, Pawprint Studio. Steam lists the PC release as September 15, 2026, and the official site also lists PS5, Xbox, Epic, iOS and Android versions. Accounts live on one of three regional servers (Aniimo-Europe, Aniimo-Americas and Aniimo-Apac), and the patch notes post separate maintenance times for each.

Twine and Combat

Aniimo review – two Aniimo clashing with fire and light attacks in combat

Twine is the hook. Instead of standing back and issuing orders, you can merge into one of your Aniimo and play as it, using its skills, movement and traversal. Guides describe two modes: Command Mode keeps your Pathfinder on the field directing the team, while Twine Mode puts you in the creature’s body. Flight, swimming and digging all come from the Aniimo you carry, so the team you bring decides where you can go.

Fights run on a Break system. Each enemy has a Break bar, and draining it opens a window for your damage dealer. Teams hold four Aniimo, and community guides split them into five roles: DPS, Break, Healer, Support and Regen. There are nine elements, and some creatures carry two. The tier lists lean heavily on that role split, which tells you combat has more depth than “bring the strongest creature”.

Exploration, Homeland and the RV

Aniimo review – flying over mountains and forests in the open world of Idyll

Idyll is built for exploring with your team. Bloom Branches work as fast-travel points, Sanctums are short puzzle dungeons that suit co-op, and Alpha bosses drop the materials you need to power up your creatures. Version 1.1 added the Whisperwake Isles, four new regions: Crescent Bay, Rosy Mirelands, Wildwater Gorge and Cloudreach Falls, plus a new story chapter.

The Homeland and RV are the downtime layer. You park a campervan in different regions, build out a plot, assign Aniimo to jobs and hatch eggs. Production keeps running while you’re offline, so it rewards checking in daily. It’s a cosy counterweight to the combat and one of the features that sets Aniimo apart from a straight action RPG.

Multiplayer: Egg Heist and Spar

Steam tags Aniimo with PvP, PvE and Co-op, and it earns all three. Operation: Egg Heist is the headline mode, described on Steam as 3-player PVEVP: squads fight wild Aniimo and each other to claim a Giga-Egg. Version 1.1 added a fair-play competitive PvP version for characters at level 50, open daily from 18:00 to 24:00. The new Spar feature lets you challenge any player to a 4v4 real-time duel, starting with a Fair Mode fought in Twine state.

The October 13 Dev Feedback post answered player complaints about Egg Heist, including Chaos Mode’s difficulty, and the November 5 and 6 patches fixed Egg Heist bugs, including players getting stuck in midair while flying. The mode is clearly still being tuned.

Monetization: Is Aniimo a Gacha?

Aniimo review – decorated Homeland garden with Aniimo relaxing outside a cottage

Not for creatures. Pawprint has said catching creatures won’t be locked behind a gacha system and that no Aniimo will be sold in the store. PC Gamer noted that the final beta did run a banner-style Rift Exploration event, so the skepticism was earned, but that isn’t how you build a roster at launch.

The money comes from cosmetics, a Monthly Pass and the Companion Handbook battle pass. The Handbook has a free Standard Edition plus paid Advanced and Collector’s Editions. The current phase features Hypnyto, a Wind DPS whose egg is in the free track, and the patch notes say this phase’s Prismana egg returns through Homeland in Season 3. Paid tracks speed things up and add extras such as Sparkling Cubes, but the season creature isn’t locked behind them forever.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No gacha for creatures: you catch everything in the world
  • Twine makes creature collecting feel physical, not menu-driven
  • Role-based team building with Break, Regen and nine elements
  • Homeland and RV give a relaxed loop between fights
  • Steady updates: 51 new Aniimo and a new region in version 1.1

Cons

  • Steam reviews at 71% show a real share of unhappy players
  • Battle pass and Monthly Pass add pressure for players who want everything
  • Egg Heist is still being rebalanced and patched
  • Progress is split across three regional servers

Aniimo Review Verdict

My Aniimo review verdict is a solid 7.5 out of 10. It does what the genre’s fans have wanted for years: an open-world creature catcher where you earn every creature by playing, with real-time combat and Twine adding a layer that menu battles never had. The 71% Steam score is a fair warning that launch was rocky and some systems are still settling. For a free game that respects your roster, it’s well worth installing. PC needs Windows 10, an i7-4770, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 970 and 40 GB of storage at minimum.
