This War Thunder review is built on Gaijin’s official changelogs, the War Thunder wiki, store pages and community data, and it’s checked again after every major patch. The game left open beta in December 2016, and as of October 2026 it’s running the “Sky Odyssey” major update (released September 16), patched up to build 2.59.0.68 on October 15. It is free to play, and the real question is how much of your time, and maybe your money, the grind will ask for.

It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and you can get into your first match without paying a cent. Play War Thunder free on PC & Mac.

Key Takeaways

  • Free to play on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation and Xbox, with an optional Premium Account and premium vehicles
  • Ten nations, each with tank, aircraft and helicopter trees, plus ships, from 1930s biplanes to modern jets and MBTs
  • Three difficulty modes (Arcade, Realistic, Simulator) make it two or three different games in one
  • Steam reviews sit at Mostly Positive (72% of more than 328,000 English reviews)
  • The grind gets steep past the mid ranks, which is where Premium starts to look tempting

What War Thunder Actually Is

War Thunder is a vehicle combat MMO. You pick a nation, start at Rank I with early tanks and planes, and research your way up through a tech tree using Research Points (RP). Silver Lions (SL) pay for the vehicles you unlock, plus repairs and ammo. Every vehicle has a battle rating (BR), and matchmaking keeps you within one BR of the top vehicle in the match.

The scale is the selling point. The USA, Germany, USSR, Britain, Japan, China, Italy, France, Sweden and Israel each have their own trees, and the same account can run a Sherman in one match and an F-14 in the next. Sky Odyssey alone added Greek aircraft and tanks, India’s Arjun Mk 1, Indonesia’s Harimau, a new Falkland Islands map called Darwin Hill, and permanent spots for Nuclear Escalation, Naval Enduring Confrontation and Bullet Hell under the To Battle! button.

Ground Battles: Where Most Players Live

War Thunder review – modern main battle tank in a Ground Battles match

Tanks are the heart of War Thunder for most players, and for good reason. Damage is modeled shell by shell. A round that slips through a weak lower plate can knock out your breech, kill your gunner and leave the commander alive, and the kill camera shows you exactly what happened. Angling armor, hiding your hull behind a ridge, and knowing where an enemy’s ammo rack sits all matter more than reflexes.

Realistic Battles is where the game shines. No reticle markers, no friendly name tags on enemies, and a spawn point system that lets you bring a plane or anti-air vehicle once you’ve earned it. Arcade is faster and friendlier, with markers and shorter reloads. Neither is perfect: matches can snowball fast, and if your team loses the first two minutes of a domination map, it often loses the game.

Air Battles, Helicopters and Jets

War Thunder review – F-14 Tomcat jets in Air Battles

Air was War Thunder’s original mode, and its flight model is still one of the game’s biggest strengths. Mouse aim lets newcomers fly a Spitfire with nothing more than a mouse and keyboard, while Simulator Battles locks you into the cockpit and expects a joystick and real flying. Energy fighting, boom-and-zoom, turn fights: the classic dogfighting tactics actually work here.

Top tier is a different beast. Modern jets carry radar, fox-two and radar-guided missiles, countermeasures and targeting pods. It’s spectacular, and the least forgiving part of the game. If you jump to top tier through a premium jet, expect a rough first week.

War Thunder review – battleship firing its main guns in Naval Battles

Naval is the smallest community, and it shows in queue times at some BRs. The ships themselves look incredible, and a full broadside from a battleship on a calm sea is one of the best sights in the game. Coastal fleets with torpedo boats play very differently from bluewater cruisers and battleships, so it’s worth trying both before deciding you don’t like ships.

Premium Account and Premium Vehicles: Worth It?

Here’s the honest version. You don’t need to pay to enjoy War Thunder, and the first three ranks of any nation go quickly for free. The grind gets heavy around Rank IV and beyond, where vehicles cost more to research and to repair.

A Premium Account gives +100% Research Points in every mode, +100% Silver Lions for battle time and +50% for active actions in Random Battles, plus perks like map bans and loss reimbursement. On the Gaijin Store it costs $7.49 for 20 days, $19.99 for 60 days, or $39.99 for 180 days (prices checked October 16, 2026). You can also buy it in-game with Golden Eagles.

Premium vehicles come fully upgraded, earn extra RP and SL, and pass research toward that nation’s tree. My advice: buy one only at a BR you already understand and in a nation you plan to keep playing. Buy Premium time when you know you’ll play daily for the next few weeks, not before a busy month. Skip anything top tier until you’ve played mid-tier for a while.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Huge roster across ten nations, with tanks, planes, helicopters and ships in one game
  • Detailed damage model that rewards knowledge over raw aim
  • Arcade, Realistic and Simulator modes suit very different players
  • Free to play on Windows, Mac and Linux, with modest minimum specs
  • Steady major updates (Sky Odyssey landed September 16, 2026)

Cons

  • The grind and repair costs ramp up hard past the middle ranks
  • Top-tier play is expensive, complex and punishing
  • Matches can snowball when a team loses the opening
  • Naval queues can be slow at some battle ratings

War Thunder Review Verdict

War Thunder gets an 8/10 from me. Nothing else free on PC lets you master this many vehicles across land, air and sea with this level of detail. The economy is the catch: the deeper you go, the more Gaijin pushes you toward Premium. Play the lower and middle ranks for free, find the nation you love, and only then decide whether Premium time makes sense for you. Download War Thunder free for PC & Mac.

FAQ

Is War Thunder free to play?

Yes. The full game is free on PC, Mac, Linux and consoles. Premium Account time, premium vehicles and Golden Eagles are optional purchases.

Is War Thunder pay to win?

Not really. Paying speeds up research and income, and premium vehicles skip the grind, but they fight at the same battle ratings as everyone else. A paid vehicle in unskilled hands is still an easy kill.

Does War Thunder run on Mac?

Yes. The official site lists macOS Big Sur 11.0 or newer, an Intel Core i5 at 2.2 GHz or better, 6 GB of RAM and a Metal-capable GPU as the minimum. My War Thunder on Mac guide covers Apple silicon performance, settings and the Rosetta deadline.
